The year that was
The time has come to look back on the events, happenings and gossip from 2009. We can’t believe it’s gone by so quickly!

Who’s the new Doctor Who?

Heart throb David Tennant has filmed his last Dr Who episode, and this year will be his last as the enigmatic Doctor. Sigh. Tennant can be credited with rejuvenating the series and making it socially acceptable to embrace your inner geek. Plus he will be breaking our hearts when he leaves. His successor, Matt Smith, has his work cut out if he’s going to fill Tennant’s boots!

Back to the Future!
This year saw the return of 80s based fashion and culture. Stressed denim, animal prints, shoulder pads and mini dresses all coined the look for 2009. Artists like La Roux, Little Boots and Ladyhawke not only produced electro-inspired hits that brought 80s nostalgia to the forefront of the pop scene, but they did it with retro chic and style.

Celebrity split #1: Jordan & Pete
Oh Katie, Katie, Katie. What are we going to do with you? Jordan and Pete divorced over reasons. That. They. Will. Never. Reveal. But they continue to milk every ounce of their story in the media until it dies. Which will be never. We’re still waiting for their much-anticipated reunion and release of the Christmas hit single ‘Boobs, Booze and Baubles’.

The day Twitter glowed green
During the rigged Iranian elections, heavy-handed forces provoked widespread rioting throughout the country. Foreign journalists were expelled, protesters arrested and (allegedly) tortured, and civilians were shot at in the street. How do we know? Because Twitter came into it’s own and transformed into the main source of news from this troubled country. Millions of Twitter followers from around the world turned their profiles green in solidarity with the troubled nation.

Death of an Icon
On June 25th 2009 Michael Jackson collapsed in his Los Angeles mansion and died hours later in hospital of cardiac arrest. Jackson’s life was defined by his intense creative talent, but was also marred by controversy surrounding allegations of child abuse, drugs and severe financial problems. The self-titled King of Pop was on the verge of a massive comeback, with a string of over 50 performances in London’s O2 Arena, but eerily, before he died he told the press that these shows were to be his ‘final curtain call’. With ex Boyzone's Stephen Gately's sad passing away a few month's later, and most recently US actress Brittany Murphey's shock death, it's not been a good year in celebsville.

Britain’s Strictly got Big Brother X-Factor
This year has been an interesting one for reality TV. Simon Cowell’s empire now rivals that of Star War’s Darth Vader, and we’re sure Cowell could transform even the Dark Lord of the Sith into a bone fide pop star. After all, look what he did to Susan Boyle. And Jedward. On the flip-side, does anyone remember what happened in this year’s Big Brother? No? We don’t either. In fact C4 confirmed that Big Brother will have one last series in 2010 before throwing in the towel.
